A cultured diamond is a diamond artificially synthesized through a process known as chemical vapor deposition, or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). Although the growth process is different from the natural one, the chemical composition, as well as the physical and optical properties, are identical to those of diamonds extracted from mines.
The CVD process begins with a thin crystal of natural diamond, placed inside a vacuum chamber, into which hydrogen and carbon are introduced. The chamber is then heated to the appropriate pressure, allowing a uniform coating to form on the diamond. This methodology allows for the production of a cultured diamond in about a month.
